How to Prepare for Your Test

Fasting and Preparation

Fasting may be required for certain blood tests such as glucose or cholesterol. If your doctor has asked you to fast, please follow the instructions below to ensure accurate results.

Before Your Test

  • Stop eating for at least 8 hours before your bloodwork, or as directed by your health practitioner.

  • Drink water only during this time and avoid coffee, tea, juice, and alcohol.

Medications and Restrictions

  • Only take medications prescribed by your doctor unless told otherwise. No vitamins (biotin), supplements, etc.
  • Do not smoke, chew gum, or exercise before your test, as these can affect your results.

After Your Test

  • Once your sample is collected, you may resume eating and return to your normal routine immediately.

SPECIMEN COLLECTION

What do I need for an in-clinic collection?

You must bring a valid health practitioner’s requisition and your New Brunswick Medicare / health card. Please have your requisition ready when you arrive.

Do I need to fast?

It depends on what your health practitioner has ordered. Your requisition will indicate whether fasting is required before your test.

Is urinalysis part of bloodwork?

Sometimes. Your health practitioner or requisition will indicate if a urine sample is required.

Will I be contacted before my home collection?

Yes. We call all home collection patients the day before to confirm the appointment time.

PROCESSING and RESULTS

Where is my blood processed?

Samples are processed at:
• The Moncton Hospital (Horizon Health Network)
• Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital (Résaux de santé Vitalité)

How do I get my test results?

Your results are sent directly to your health practitioner, who will discuss them with you. You may also view your results on MyHealthNB once they have been released by the hospital. Please note that you can only get a MyHealthNB code at Service New Brunswick (SNB).

Are your collectors trained?

Yes. All collectors are fully trained and follow approved guidelines, policies, and procedures.

FEES and COVERAGE

What is the cost for in-clinic collection?

The fee for in-clinic blood collection is $20.

What are the home collection rates?

Rates vary by location and distance. Please contact us directly for pricing.

Is private blood collection covered by Medicare?

No. Private blood collection is not covered under Medicare.
